Augustus John, who was born and grew up in Tenby, was one of the most important British artists of the early twentieth century. The novelist Virginia Woolf called the years immediately after 1908 'the age of Augustus John,' whilst his friend Percy Wyndham Lewis would dub the ten years up to 1914 'the Augustan decade.' This lecture looks at John's early life growing up in Tenby with his sister, the artist Gwen John, his time at the Slade School of Art in London, and his early success and fame up to the outbreak of World War One.

Dr. David Boyd Haycock is a Visiting Research Fellow in the Department of Art History at Oxford Brookes University. He is the author of a number of books on British art in the first half of the twentieth century, including A Crisis of Brilliance: Five Young British Artists and the Great War (2009), and Brilliant Destiny: The Age of Augustus John (2023).
